Joshua MerokJoshua Merok, M.D.

Associate Medical Director
Board Certified Family Medicine

 

Dr. Merok earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco, after completing his Bachelor of Science and Master’s degree in Toxicology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and fellowships at Stroger Hospital and Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.  Dr. Merok also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine, Clinical Instructor of Family Medicine at the University of Illinois-Chicago and a Community Preceptor at Advocate Illinois Masonic Family Medicine.  His clinical interests include HIV medicine, addiction, pain management, and evidence-based medicine.

 

What Dr. Merok loves about being a physician: “In addition to seeing and meeting interesting people everyday, I really love the continual state of learning that medicine demands.  Staying current with new research and trends is a challenge, but well worth it!”.


 When Dr. Merok is not practicing medicine, he is spending time with his lovely wife and twins.

 

 

Niby MathewNiby Mathew, M.D.

Board Certified Family Medicine

 

Dr. Mathew attended the University of Szeged in Europe for her undergraduate studies.  She earned her medical degree from St. Christopher’s College of Medicine in England and completed her residency through the Advocate Christ Family Medicine program.

 

In addition to practicing medicine at Michigan Avenue Primary Care and Michigan Avenue Immediate Care, Dr. Mathew has been an Attending Faculty of the Family Medicine Department of Rush University Medical  Center and Rush University Southwest Family Physicians group.

 

What Dr. Mathew loves about being a physician: “I have always been interested in health & wellness; I love providing guidance & treatment to others;  I love educating others on the human body & illnesses that affect our body; I believe in preventive care and what I can do now for my patient to prevent future illness; My job is to provide awareness to my patient; I provide a relaxed environment so that my patients aren’t afraid of going to their doctors’ office.”

 

When she’s not practicing medicine, Dr. Mathew enjoys the following:

Niby MathewKatie Fox, M.D.

Board Certified Family Medicine
Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine

 

Dr. Fox moved to Chicago after earning her undergraduate degree from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania.  She completed her medical training at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and her residency at Macneal Hospital.  An athlete herself with a an interest in the treatment of injury and illness in sport fitness and recreational activities, Dr. Fox completed her sports medicine fellowship at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital where she worked with recreational, high school and NCAA division I collegiate athletes.

 

Dr. Fox’s treatment philosophy merges the perspectives of provider and participant of sports. With this unique viewpoint, she aims to “return patients to the activities that they love in a safe and efficient manner” and “teach patients how to prevent future injuries and illness”.

 

Dr. Fox’s clinical interests include:

  • Concussion evaluation and management

  • Injury management

  • Exercise program development

What Dr. Fox loves about being a physician: “I enjoy meeting new people on a daily basis. I love teaching people the importance of leading a physically active lifestyle. Exercise is medicine!”

 

Dr. Fox enjoys an active lifestyle and spending time with family and friends. It is no surprise that she also enjoys “watching sports as much as I love participating in them”.

 

Tatiana Batista

Michael Kupkowski, M.D.

Board Certified Family Medicine

 

Dr. Kupkowski attended the University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana where he earned his Bachelor of Science in microbiology and Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. While an undergraduate, he worked as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor focusing on the causes of addiction and dependence. Dr. Kupkowski later attended the University of California-Berkeley where he earned a Masters of Science with an emphasis on Public Health. He completed his medical degree at the University of California San Francisco and his residency through the MacNeal Family Medicine Residency Program in Illinois.

 

Dr. Kupkowski’s clinical interests include:

  • Mental health

  • Delivering healthcare to the Spanish-speaking population

  • Women’s health

  • Medical education/teaching

  • Addiction medicine

Dr. Kupkowski’s treatment philosophy is not only “patient-centered” but “patient-directed.” He treats his patients as he would like to be treated, and works with them to facilitate their active involvement in their treatment plans.


What Dr. Kupkowski loves about being a physician: “I love the personal, societal, and cultural contexts through which patients tell their stories in our clinical encounters.  I love to speak Spanish and have the opportunity to make each clinical encounter one in which patients can walk away having had a positive and potentially powerful, enriching experience. Evidence-based medicine is constantly changing and I enjoy the challenge of keeping up-to-date with those changes”.

 

When Dr. Kupkowski is not practicing medicine, he is spending time with his family, enjoying the outdoors through hiking, backpacking, and long-distance running, and supporting Chicago sports teams as an avid fan.
