Always Tired? Here's 7 Possible Reasons Why
You got enough sleep. You drank your coffee. Yet you're still exhausted. If fatigue has become your new normal, your body may be trying to tell you something.

Everyone feels tired occasionally. A late night, a busy week at work, or a stressful season of life can leave you running on empty. But if you’re feeling exhausted day after day despite getting adequate rest, it’s worth taking a closer look.

Persistent fatigue isn’t a diagnosis in and of itself — it’s a symptom of something else.

At Michigan Avenue Primary Care, one of the most common concerns we hear is, “I don’t know why I’m so tired all the time.” The truth is that many different health conditions can contribute to fatigue, and some are easier to identify and treat than you might think.

1. You’re not getting quality sleep

This may sound obvious, but sleep problems are one of the leading causes of daytime fatigue.

Sometimes the issue isn’t the number of hours you’re sleeping but the quality of that sleep. Conditions such as sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, and frequent nighttime awakenings can leave you feeling exhausted even after spending plenty of time in bed.

If you regularly wake up feeling unrefreshed, poor sleep may be part of the problem.

2. A thyroid disorder

Your thyroid plays a major role in regulating metabolism and energy production.

When the thyroid becomes underactive, a condition known as hypothyroidism, fatigue is often one of the first symptoms people notice. Weight gain, dry skin, constipation, and feeling unusually cold may also occur.

The good news is that we can identify thyroid disorders through simple blood testing.

3. Anemia

Your body relies on red blood cells to carry oxygen to tissues throughout the body. When you don’t have enough healthy red blood cells, fatigue often follows.

Anemia can develop for many reasons, including iron deficiency, vitamin deficiencies, chronic disease, or blood loss. Many people are surprised to learn that a simple blood test can often identify the problem.

4. Stress, anxiety, or depression

Mental health and physical energy are closely connected.

Chronic stress can leave you feeling mentally and physically drained. Anxiety may make it difficult to relax or sleep well, while depression often causes fatigue, low motivation, and a general sense of exhaustion.

Sometimes the body expresses emotional strain through physical symptoms long before a person recognizes what’s happening.

5. Diabetes or blood sugar problems

When blood sugar levels are consistently too high or too low, your body’s ability to use energy efficiently can be affected.

Fatigue is a common symptom of both undiagnosed diabetes and poorly controlled diabetes. Increased thirst, frequent urination, and unexplained weight changes may also occur.

Because diabetes often develops gradually, people sometimes live with symptoms for months before seeking evaluation.

6. Nutritional deficiencies

Your body needs certain vitamins and minerals to produce energy effectively.

Low levels of vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, and other nutrients can contribute to persistent fatigue. Even people who eat relatively healthy diets can sometimes develop deficiencies due to absorption issues, dietary restrictions, or underlying medical conditions.

This is another area where laboratory testing can provide valuable answers.

7. An underlying medical condition

Sometimes fatigue is the result of a more complex health issue.

Heart disease, autoimmune disorders, chronic infections, kidney disease, and many other medical conditions can cause ongoing exhaustion.

That doesn’t mean every tired person has a serious illness. But when fatigue persists for weeks or months, it’s worth investigating rather than simply hoping it goes away.

When should you see a doctor?

If fatigue is interfering with your daily life, it’s time to have a conversation.

You should especially consider scheduling an appointment if:

  • Your fatigue has lasted several weeks
  • You’re sleeping well, but still feel exhausted
  • You’re experiencing other symptoms
  • Your energy levels continue to decline
  • Fatigue is affecting work, relationships, or daily activities

Many causes of fatigue are highly treatable once they’re identified.
