If you need a sinus lift, it’s reasonable to wonder whether that’s something handled by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist — especially if you already see Michigan Avenue ENT for sinus care.
A sinus lift isn’t a routine ENT procedure; it’s a dental surgical procedure that prepares your upper jaw for dental implants. That said, your sinus health absolutely plays a role — and that’s where coordinated care with our ENT specialist, Dr. Julian Dixon, comes in.
At Michigan Avenue Primary Care and Michigan Avenue ENT in Chicago, Illinois, we believe in team-based care. Let’s break down what a sinus lift actually is — and how our team fits into the picture.
A sinus lift — also called sinus augmentation — is a procedure performed by a dental implant surgeon or oral and maxillofacial surgeon. It’s necessary when you don’t have enough bone in your upper back jaw to support a dental implant safely.
When you lose your upper molars (i.e, your wisdom teeth), the bone in that area can shrink over time. At the same time, the maxillary sinus — the air-filled cavity above those teeth — can expand downward. If you don’t have adequate bone height between your jaw and your sinus, an implant may not have enough support.
During a sinus lift, the dentist gently lifts the sinus membrane and places bone graft material under it. Over several months, that graft integrates with your natural bone, creating a stronger foundation for implants.
The goal is structural support — not treatment of sinus disease.
The primary reason for a sinus lift is dental implant preparation. This procedure is typically done only when planning for implants, as there are no other established medical indications.
You may be advised to consider a sinus lift if:
If you’re not pursuing dental implants, a sinus lift is generally not necessary.
Even though a sinus lift is a dental procedure, the health of your sinuses matters — especially if you have chronic sinus infections, nasal obstruction, or inflammation.
At Michigan Avenue ENT, we evaluate and treat conditions such as:
If sinus inflammation or chronic infection is present, we may need to address it before dental implant surgery. Active sinus disease can increase the risk of complications during or after a sinus lift.
That’s where coordinated care becomes important.
Your dental surgeon may refer you to Michigan Avenue ENT for evaluation if imaging shows sinus thickening, chronic inflammation, or structural blockage. We can assess your sinus health and, when necessary, provide treatment — such as medical management or balloon sinuplasty — before implant-related procedures move forward.
Michigan Avenue Primary Care supports the bigger health picture. If you have chronic conditions like diabetes, autoimmune disease, or immune compromise, optimizing your overall health before surgery is essential.
We can help manage:
